Located in a neighborhood of single-family homes, West Heights Townhomes is designed to quietly insert itself through use of traditional craftsmen style, while also providing an alternative to the typical affordable apartment complex. The simple, rectangular form provides an economical base for the design; after which, the larger components— such as windows and canopies— are inserted rhythmically along the front façade. The rear façade celebrates the dominant feature: an exterior balcony providing access to upper apartment units. The play on rhythm, structure and material transforms what could be a bleak component on the back of the building into a unique and elemental feature of the building.
